This procedure wipes the device.
Every photo, thread, and app that is not in an encrypted backup is gone. Do not start Prepare until that backup exists and you have opened it once to confirm.
After Prepare, restrictions that a Safari profile cannot apply will start working. OpenHat Security: Level 4 hides Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, Snapchat, TikTok, X, Pinterest, Reddit, and LinkedIn, and includes PIN plus the Safari list. That file is Level 4.2. Lockdown Mode is a separate Settings switch (Level 3).
Steps
- Encrypted Finder backup of the iPhone. Verify you can see the backup on the Mac.
- Install Apple Configurator (free).
- Cable the iPhone. Trust the computer.
- Select the device → Prepare.
- Manual Configuration. Enable Supervise devices. Leave MDM enrollment off unless you are also running your own Level 4.1 server.
- Continue. The phone erases and returns Supervised.
- Restore the backup if you want data back, then install OpenHat Security: Level 4 from the Level 4.2 page (Safari or Configurator → Add → Profiles).
- Optional: Level 3 Lockdown Mode after the profile is installed. You do not have to.
- Confirm Settings → General → VPN & Device Management. Blocked apps should be gone. AirDrop / Siri should be forced off.
Unsupervise
Erase All Content and Settings again, or restore a backup from before Prepare. There is no unsupervise toggle.
